Embracing the Father’s Call: A Dream’s Lesson

By Deb Somjak

The dream occurred on 3/24/16. The year was recorded as 2026, whether by mistake or by intention. What followed was this:

In my dream, I watched a father lovingly call his son to spend time together. The son was young and eager to respond. The father was deliberate in the son’s presence. As I observed, the father engaged primarily by building him up, exhorting him, drawing on his strengths, and mindfully guiding him to trust the father’s lead, even when the son felt weak or uncertain. As an eyewitness in the dream, I saw the scene unfold outdoors near the son’s home. The father traveled some distance with the intention of spending time with him, calling the son out of his place of comfort.

I noted how the father spurred his son to do more—to go further—beaming with pride and excitement, reflecting his deep love and encouragement for his own, and how the child flourished in that relationship. The son could indeed do more and go further with confidence at his father’s word. Throughout the exchange, I smiled warmly and felt privileged to witness the son’s growth and maturity. I felt as if I, too, had an awareness of being known in the deepest place by my heavenly Father.

After some time, I approached the father, compelled to thank him for his example, yet unaware until that moment that I could step into the scene rather than simply observe. I stepped forward and expressed my appreciation for the genuine care they had shown to each other. Suddenly, my husband entered the scene and revealed that he, too, had witnessed the father-son exchange in the dream, unbeknownst to me until that moment. He stepped forward in faith, bypassing me, sharing with great enthusiasm, and thanking the Father.

After awakening from the dream, I inquired of the Lord, “What is the dream about?”

I offer that the dream holds a two-fold meaning. First, Jesus calls for the unbroken union of His covenant fellowship with His children. He delights in freely and openly expressing His agape love, allowing the communion to testify to the undefiled merit of all who witness it, as they, too, will renew their trust and draw near to the will of the Lord. I can hardly fathom the Father of heaven longing for one of His own, calling that one to be alongside Him.

The Father has a work that can only be accomplished through partnering with His wisdom and instruction. His children must renew their will in the grace of knowing that, apart from Him, we cannot bear His purposes for our lives and His glory (John 15:5; Psalm 16:2).

I am limited, as a parent, on this side of heaven, to understand the ache of my heart’s longing to be with one of my children. Yet Jesus is pursuing restored fellowship, desiring to lead His own with joy and to strengthen faith with purpose. Ephesians 3:19 reminds us that beyond the human limits of love, we are to attain to comprehend and to know the love of Christ, which passes knowledge that we may be filled with all the fullness of God.

I feel the weight of reflecting His heart accurately, yet I am humbled knowing that He would trust me to do so.

I’m missing you, my dear child. You have gone through the battle, crossed rocky places, pressed and persecuted on every side, yet you were not alone. The Lord your God lives. He knows every hair on your head. Victory is leading you to come unto Him, to come out of the comfort and familiar places, step forward, and freely approach the Father. Today is the day to accept His invitation! Listen to His voice and know His heart, to impart, build you up, and equip you. Your enemy’s voice is one of defeat and discouragement. Join the Father. He desires to give His presence, wisdom, and encouragement in unbroken fellowship.

“Lift up your eyes on high and see who has created these heavenly bodies. The One who brings out their host by number. He calls them all by name; because of the greatness of His might and the strength of His power, not one is missing” (Isaiah 40:26).

Equally important is not only the action of Father to son but the outcome of faith in action to the Father. Interestingly, the Father’s covenant was shown, and likewise, my husband shows another covenant union joined in agreement, united as one, seeing, hearing, and stepping out in faith. The story of Jonathan illustrates this truth of listening to and trusting the Father.

Which leads me to the second understanding, which could reveal a profound faith: deliberately and boldly, yet quietly, stepping into action instead of waiting. Not hesitating to trust God, even if your move is small in numbers. You may be the instrument of God’s victory on behalf of the people. This reflects Jonathan’s faith, demonstrated in 1 Samuel 14:7 (NKJV): “Then Saul said to the people with him, ‘Take a count and see who has left us.’ When they had taken a count, behold, Jonathan and his armor-bearer were missing.”
